Description
Our Depth Finders are designed to help you check the depth of your turned forms, including bowls, platters, hollow forms, boxes and any other object you are working with on the lathe that you need to know where the bottom is to avoid going too deep.
Why choose our Depth Finders?
- Quick, easy and accurate way to check your depth.
- Can be used on both open and closed forms.
- More durable (and accurate) than that pencil or dowel you have been using.
- No numbers involved, just physically transfer the measurement.
- Anodized aluminum with a 1/4″ steel rod.
- Available in different three sizes, depending on your needs.
- Every component is heavy-duty, built to last and manufactured in our Fort Collins, CO shop.
How to use: Insert the rod into either the Open Form slot (for bowls and more open shapes) or the Closed Form slot (for hollow forms and vessels with smaller openings). Advance the depth rod until it reaches the very bottom of the form, then lock it in place and remove the tool from the form. Next, place the depth finder against the face of the form with the rod positioned along the outside. Close one eye and look straight down to clearly see the relationship between the interior depth and the outside shape, giving you a quick visual reference for bottom thickness and internal positioning.
Which size? The size of the depth finder corresponds to both the maximum depth and maximum width that the tool can be used for. (i.e. the 12″ Depth Finder can measure a depth of up to 12″ on a form that is no wider than 12″ in diameter.)

I have one that I made and have used for years. Saw this in your add and decided to get a much better version.

Excellent quality product. I just wanted to keep turning and not worry about designing tools. Trent has done that for you in a well thought out high quality tool that performs a simple but necessary task.

Does just what the name implies. A bit pricey but what isn’t these days. Well made, should last forever.

I didn’t think I would need the two contact points but on the very first bowl I needed both.

Sure, I could’ve made something cheaper but this tool is rock solid and has a cool factor that I couldn’t duplicate. Very pleased with it.

I wanted one of these when I purchased my stabalizer and turning tools but had to wait until I saved up to get a couple more tools from the online shop. now I can stop making funnels pushing the limits while turning.

I was using a stick and rod now I feel I have moved up

This depth finder is great. I use one rod on the outside of finder to show my overall stop depth and the center finder with another rod to show my work depth. Couldn’t be happier.
