Nathalie Groeneweg: Turning Lamps
September 23-26, 2025 (4-Days)
Description: Want to make a practical and modular lamp? This course is for you! We will spend 4 days together to turn, one by one, each element of the lamp starting with tubes and joints, then the lampshade turned so thin that the light passes through and comes to highlight the fiber,
then we will manufacture the base and the socket holder as well as all the small elements necessary for the proper holding of the luminaire. (rings, feet, etc…) What an emotion when all these elements come together and become a pretty table lamp ready to illuminate your long reading evening or create a warm atmosphere in your living room!
About Nathalie: The daughter of Dutch farmers, Nathalie Groeneweg grew up on a farm in the Loiret region with her four brothers. At the age of 11, music and the guitar crossed her path. She grew up and went to England to train as a violin maker at Newark and Sherwood College, then in various French workshops. In 2012, she began training at the Escoulen school in Aiguines, Var.Atelier NG was founded in April 2013. Her curiosity and passion for the material led her to train in sculpture and wooden jewelry making in the following years. In 2015, she finally found a place to set up her workshop in Puy Saint Martin, taking over the studio of her instructor, Jean-François Escoulen. In a magnificent natural setting conducive to creativity, Nathalie offers turned objects, sculpture, instrument repair (accordion and guitar), and individual training. Atelier NG is a member of the French Association of Artistic Woodturning and Atelier d’Art de France. She has participated in various artistic collaborations, such as those organized by Aftab, Art et la Matière, and the International Wood Culture Society.
Kristin Levier: Adding Sculptural Elements to Your Woodturnings with Joinery, Bending and Carving
September 23-25, 2025 (3-Days)
Description: This non-lathe-based workshop will nudge your woodturning toward sculpture by adding joinery, wood bending and power carving techniques to your arsenal of skills. We’ll use multiple types of joinery (hardware, dowels, glue, magnets) to securely attach wood components together to make protruding details (e.g. legs, finials, spouts) and asymmetric elements. Compressed hardwood will be used to create decorative bent wood parts that will be attached to a central wood piece. Use of power carving will allow generation of smooth transitions between elements and creation of sculptural shapes. Demonstrations and hands-on work will prepare students to choose and work on individual projects that suit their interests, and a short study of basic design will help guide our creative process. The workshop is also suitable for non-woodturners who want to learn skills in sculptural woodwork.
Note: we will not be using lathes in this workshop
Suitable for all skill levels.
Techniques: Wood bending, wood joinery, wood carving, power carving, wood sculpture
Tools/Equipment: micromotor power carvers, bandsaws, sanders, drills and files
