Description
Our 3/8″ Radius Scrapers are used for the final finishing cuts on the inside of your hollow form. Easily removes any humps or bumps that were created from the hollowing process. Each tool comes ready to go with a sharp M2 High Speed Steel tip. When worn out, tips are easy to replace, replacement tips can be found here.
Why choose a Radius Scraper?
- The larger M2 HSS cutter helps you smooth out the inside surface of your hollow form.
- Designed to be used by hand or with the Stabilizer.
- Available with a standard or negative rake tip (see details below).
- Narrow profile for superior access and control – allows you to hollow longer before needing to clear out the shavings.
- The finishing tool that Trent would not be without.
- Designed by a woodturner for woodturners and made in our Fort Collins, Colorado shop.
Standard Grind vs. Negative Rake Grind: The negative rake grind can be used at a relatively flat angle, and will have less tenancy to catch and grab in awkward areas inside of your hollow form. It is especially useful in the bottom of end grain forms, as the direct end grain can be difficult especially if you are not paying attention to the tool when it enters that area. When I use the standard grind, I usually rotate the tool at a down angle, to mimic the negative rake angle for forms that the tool is wanting to grab & catch. Both achieve the same goal of a smooth surface. Watch a short video about sharpening here.
Which one should I buy? When purchasing a Radius Scraper we generally recommend the Bent tool. Since you have already hollowed out the form, there is no need for a Straight radius scraper (unless you hollowed a fairly straight sided form). Likewise, the Extreme Bent radius scraper is only useful when you have a very flat topped form or form with other hard to reach areas. 99% of the time Trent reaches for a Bent Radius Scraper.
Diameter: 3/8″ / Overall Length of Tool: 11″ / Approximate Hollowing Depth: 4″
Don’t forget a handle. We recommend a 16″ Handle, like our Blue Super Tool Handle with a Blue Insert (included in a “Super Set”).
